Because if you do, you're not alone.

Many singles are facing the stress and loneliness of Valentines Day. The only question is, will you let it get the best of you or make the most out of this holiday?

Oh joy of joys, another holiday is upon us; only this one can easily be your worst or best of them all. And yes, you can close your eyes, pretend it's not really happening but whether you admit it or let alone even celebrate it; Valentine's Day is here and doesn’t’ plan on leaving anytime soon.

Look around, this is the only day of the year where couples are out in full force. They can hug and smooch in public without being ridiculed or shouted at about ‘getting a room’, because almost every other couple is doing the same thing. For them it’s a great day. They get to be thankful and spend a romantic evening out, not to mention the over priced gifts they get and all that endless, delicious holiday candy. And, when you are in a relationship and truly happy for this day, nothing can compare. But sadly for the many single people out there it's not all peaches and cream.

If you are single this time of year, you don’t get an easy time either. And although you don’t have to worry about what gifts to buy and whether or not your boyfriend or girlfriend will like it or not, you have enough on your plate to keep you unhappy and in a crabby mood all day.

Everywhere you look there are the cards, flowers and chocolates loaded up in the stores all around, just waiting for people to buy. Even on the radio and TV, there are endless messages of love and romance, so much so that sometimes you can’t even listen to the music because so many people are calling into stations expressing their love and devotion to their partner.

There are actually so many people frustrated with this day one day of love, that the amount of websites saying ‘I hate Valentines Day!” is unbelievable. Some feel that the whole holiday has become extremely artificial and just another way for million dollar businesses to make more money. It even goes so far, as to have hundreds of books written just discussing how much they hate this day.

That is truly taking it a little far. We are not all going to have a date for Valentines Day, and often its better to have no date than one you just got the week before so you wouldn’t be left out of the celebrating. So what ever reason you hate Valentines Day for, just remember it is only one day of gifts and candy you’re missing. And when the day comes that you find Mr. or Mrs. Right, and can truly understand why couples around the world are really happy on this day, it will make up for all the bad or mediocre Valentines you had in the past.

President Gerald R. Ford, our thirty-eighth president, passed away on December 26, 2006.

Current President George Bush appointed Tuesday, January 2, 2007, as a national day of mourning. “I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President Ford. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance,” President Bush said in a proclamation on the White House’s website.

President Ford is most well known for being the president who took office after President Nixon resigned because of the Watergate incident. Mr. Trapp, history teacher, said, “[President Ford] is credited with carrying the nation through a hard time.” He “tried to stabilize the bad image” of the corrupt government.

In his September 8, 1974 televised speech pardoning Nixon, President Ford described Nixon’s resignation as “…an American tragedy in which we have all played a part…There are no historic or legal precedents to which I can turn in this matter, none that precisely fit the circumstances of a private citizen who has resigned the Presidency of the United States.”

For this reason, Mr. Fisk, history teacher, said that people remembered him as being a good person.

The televised speech continued, “But it is common knowledge that serious allegations and accusations hang like a sword over our former President’s head, threatening his health as he tries to reshape his life, a great part of which was spent in the service of this country and by the mandate of its people.”

Ford served in office from 1974 to 1977. Mr. Fisk informed me that Ford was the only president not elected. That is, other vice presidents became president due to the death of the president, but Ford was never re-elected after his term was over. He won the Republican nomination, but in the end lost the election to Jimmy Carter.

He died at age 93 on December 26, 2006, in Rancho Mirage, California.

The first semester of the 2006-2007 school year has ended, and with it so has the first semester of only six absences and that leaves some students in a bind.

“This is my first year petitioning, and I think it’s complete crap,” senior Jessica said, “ I was sick for a week and my note from the doctor’s office only counted for one day.”

Jessica isn’t the only one, either. Many other students and even parents at feel that six absences are just not enough for a whole semester.

As it stands today, if students are not on a school related absence, a doctor’s note is needed. This rule is deemed unnecessary by certain parents, “I’m not going to send my daughter to the doctor’s every time she has a sniffle or headache, that’s ridiculous,” parent Sarah said.

But not everyone is complaining, sophomore Jessika does not find it such a big deal. “ I know a plenty of people who petitioned for their credits who were granted credits, including me! As long as you have a real reason for being gone you should get them.”

Either way, students or parents view it; Vallivue board members are standing by their decision to continue the six-day absence policy. This means students will need to use their days sparingly or prepare to petition.
